Performance Health: Connecting Training, Recovery and Better Decisions
A readiness score can be useful.
It can also become a distraction when it is treated as the answer.
Sustainable endurance performance depends on a wider system: training load, recovery, nutrition, sleep, consistency, resilience, life context and the judgement applied to all of them.
Flow Momentum calls that system Performance Health.
What does Performance Health mean?
Performance Health describes the conditions that support performance over time.
For an endurance athlete, it includes:
- progressive and event-relevant training;
- sufficient recovery and sleep;
- fuelling that matches the work;
- consistency without unnecessary load spikes;
- the ability to adapt when work, travel or life changes;
- clear decisions when the evidence is incomplete.
It does not mean turning every athlete into a patient. Flow Momentum remains a performance and wellness product. It does not diagnose injury or illness, prescribe treatment or replace a doctor, physiotherapist or dietitian.
That boundary is part of the Performance Health positioning, not a footnote.
Why one daily score is not enough
Wearables compress complex data into convenient scores. That helps with attention, but compression removes context.
A low score may reflect poor sleep, unusual training, travel, illness, measurement noise or a personal baseline that differs from the population model. A high score does not guarantee that a hard session is appropriate.
The 2026 multidimensional framework for athlete monitoring makes a similar distinction. Assessment is an isolated measurement. Monitoring is repeated, systematic data collection used to interpret change over time. The authors argue that monitoring should support a decision, not become a stand-alone determinant of performance.

The five Performance Health questions
Before changing training, ask five questions:

The final row is important. Missing evidence should reduce confidence rather than invite a guess.
How Performance Health differs by sport
The same framework produces different practical questions.
For a cyclist, power, FTP context, ride duration and climbing may dominate the analysis. For a runner, pace, long-run share, durability and impact load matter more. A triathlete needs the interaction between swim, bike and run, plus brick sessions and race specificity.
That is why Flow Momentum provides separate paths for cycling, running and triathlon.
The athlete does not need three products. The system needs three ways of interpreting the work.
Health, resilience and empowerment
The World Health Organization describes regular physical activity as important for health, sleep, mood, energy and healthy ageing. Endurance sport can contribute to those outcomes, but more training is not always better.
Performance Health introduces a useful counterweight to optimisation culture. The goal is not to maximise every metric. It is to help the athlete understand the trade-offs and make an informed choice.
That is also a form of empowerment. The athlete should be able to see what a recommendation is based on, question it and adjust it with a coach when needed.
For organisations, the same principle applies. Sustainable performance is influenced by work design, recovery opportunity, communication and team behaviour. It cannot be solved by counting steps alone.

A useful answer should not diagnose a problem. It should identify the relevant evidence, show uncertainty and offer a proportionate action.

Choose one daily score you check regularly.
For seven days, write down what decision you made after seeing it and which other evidence you considered.
At the end of the week, ask whether the score improved the decision or merely changed your mood.
